Iberostar and UIB announce the second edition of the Catedra del Mar Scholarships

For the second consecutive year, the Iberostar Catedra del Mar opens the application process for grants to promote research in marine ecology. Up to eleven projects from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) will benefit from this financial contribution.

The initiative aims to support projects on research, conservation and management of the marine environment started by young researchers. Grants are open to students who have successfully completed the Final Degree Project (TFG), the Master’s Final Project (TFM), or PhDs who are immersed in a scientific research process. The projects presented must be framed within the three lines of action of Iberostar’s Wave of Change movement: the improvement of coastal health (in particular, the assessment and protection of the Oceanic Posidonia), the responsible consumption of seafood and circular economy (impact of single-use plastic use).

The scholarships will be distributed as follows:

  • Five 1,500€ scholarships to present and publish research work
  • Three 4,000€ scholarships to foster mobility for PhD students
  • Three 10,000€ scholarships for research projects

“We are very proud to continue collaborating with the UIB on this project to promote research in the marine environment and understand ocean problems from a scientific and academic perspective. At Iberostar, we are firmly committed to promoting responsible tourism. This is one more step in our commitment,” says Alejandro Borrás, manager of the Iberostar Foundation.

People interested in obtaining these scholarships can register through this link. Applications will be open until September 15, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. In October, it will be announced which applications have been awarded the scholarships.

The Iberostar Cátedra del Mar, coordinated by Dr. Guillem Mateu Vicens, emerged in 2018 as a result of a collaboration agreement between the Iberostar Group and the UIB. It is part of the hotel group’s ‘Wave of Change’ movement, an initiative that aims to promote the protection of seas and oceans.
