Iberostar Wins Two International Travel Awards for Sustainability at WTM 2019

We are dedicated to building on the momentum of Wave of Change to continue leading Iberostar down a sustainable path.

We feel proud to announce that Iberostar received two awards at World Travel Market (WTM) London 2019 for our work in sustainability. The awards we received this year are humbling, but we understand we are still in the beginning of our journey. We are dedicated to building on the momentum of Wave of Change to continue leading Iberostar down a sustainable path.

WTM is a conference dedicated to connecting the world’s travel providers with remarkable insight and opportunity aimed to provide insight into how the industry will look in the next five years. The International Travel & Tourism Awards are already a benchmark in the tourism industry, recognize excellence in business management and allow all organizations, large and small, as well as individual initiatives, to validate their good practices.

The first award, ‘Outstanding Contribution To The Travel & Tourism Industry’, is given to companies, businesses or destinations distinguished by their innovation, human interest or sustainability and was awarded to Iberostar based off the accomplishments of our Wave of Change movement. Wave of Change, our pioneering responsible tourism movement established in 2017, works to move us down the path of sustainability through bold strategies to move beyond plastics, promote responsible seafood consumption and improve coastal health. This award validates Iberostar as pioneers and innovators in the responsible tourism industry.

In addition to this award, WTM also recognizes leaders in the responsible tourism industry for reducing negative impacts on our world and increasing the positive ones. This year, we received the gold award for ‘Reducing Plastic Waste’ for our work in eliminating single-use plastics in the rooms of our 36 hotels in Spain in 2018 and expanding that portfolio to its 120 hotels around the world in 2019. Finn Ackerman (pictured below), Global Commercial Director for Iberostar, was there to receive the award on our behalf.

The purpose of the responsible tourism awards is to encourage change in the industry and single out recognition for those proving they are having a positive impact. As such, it is further reason why establishing initiatives such as Wave of Change is a powerful movement for the tourism industry as a whole. Ibeorstar recognizes the importance that lies in receiving these awards on a global stage. Becoming a sustainable company is possible, and the faster that companies recognize this and begin acting, the faster our planet improves. The time has come for the tourism industry to wake up, aim high,  and start sprinting down the path of sustainability.

We are very proud of the awards that we received at WTM 2019, but also understand that the journey towards sustainability has just begun. Each year Iberostar is continually challenging itself to take the next step towards sustainability, and Wave of Change is the movement driving these initiatives. Wave of Change will continue to build on its success in 2019 by creating new goals for 2020 that push the boundaries of what it means to be a responsible tourism company.
