100% of the seafood we serve in Mexico is now responsible

At Iberostar, we seek to drive the responsible consumption of seafood while relying on gastronomic excellence and local tradition

As part of our commitment to source 100% of our seafood responsibly by 2025 in all of our destinations and lead responsible tourism, we are very excited to announce that all of the seafood we serve in Mexico now comes from responsible sources. 


We are coming to this milestone after achieving over 70% of responsible sourcing globally by the end of 2021 thanks to gathering data, using culinary innovation to offer local products and lesser-known species, and working with suppliers to obtain seafood products that are certified or come from local providers that engage in practices that help our oceans.

Responsible seafood at Iberostar

For Iberostar, the responsible consumption of seafood means the intersection of prioritizing environmental sustainability, livelihoods and safe working practices, and the economic viability of fisheries – environment, people, and economy.


We consider fisheries and farms to be responsible if they are: 

  • Certified by a certification benchmarked and recognized by the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative
  • Rated or in an improvement program
  • Responsible, but not yet assessed or certified, supporting local fishing communities

Lifting up local fishing communities

As part of our responsible seafood commitment, we work to support local fishing communities. Thus, we work hand in hand with local producers to support United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 14.4 and 14.B, working to guarantee the legality and traceability of locally sourced seafood and provide access of small-scale artisanal fishers to marine resources and markets. This way, local fisheries can share their heritage and local products with our guests.

Our progress towards 100% responsible sourcing

The responsible consumption of seafood Iberostar has continued to grow over the past year amidst the challenges for supply chains around the world, thanks to the collaboration of hundreds of people, from the Sustainability teams to Operations and Purchasing at Iberostar, as well as all of our suppliers.

Since January of 2021, we have gone from 41% to 70% of responsible sourcing globally. In total, we have served over 1,000 tons of responsible seafood in all of our locations – which equates to over 135,000 kg per month.
