Iberostar Group supports sustainable fishing

According to data published by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), over the last 40 years, marine life populations have dwindled by 39%, 90% are overfished in the Mediterranean and more than 80% of fish stocks are exploited to their limits. Facts and figures that reveal the serious situation of our oceans today and which represent a real cause for concern.

Fully aware of this situation, the Iberostar Group has launched its new sustainable fishing initiative, making us the first hotel chain in Spain and the fifth in Europe to hold MSC Chain of Custody certification. The Marine Stewardship Council is an independent global non-profit organisation that sets the standards for sustainable fishing. The MSC certifies each phase of the process in order to guarantee sustainability, from the time the fish is caught until it is served to a customer, ensuring full compliance with the set of strict requirements laid down by the association.

The aim of promoting sustainable fishing is to prevent overfishing and to contribute to the conservation of marine resources, keeping the species in a healthy situation.

As part of its commitment to this cause, now includes sustainably certified fish on the menus at the following restaurants:  Gran Clavel, at the Las Letras Gran Vía (Madrid); Ca’s Menestral, at the Iberostar Paseo de Gracia (Barcelona); Astir, at the Iberostar Grand Portals Nous (Majorca); and Marea, at the Iberostar Playa de Palma (Majorca).

The presentation of this new project was held at the Iberostar Las Letras Gran Vía on 15th June. Presiding over the event was Gloria Fluxà, Vice-Chairman & Chief Sustainability Officer of Iberostar Group, accompanied by Laura Rodríguez, the MSC -Marine Stewardship Council’s Director for Spain and Portugal. Guests were also able to enjoy a delicious menu based on sustainably sourced fish created by the chain’s chefs in collaboration with Pepe Solla.

The initiative is part of the ‘Wave of Change’ movement launched by our company and aimed at contributing to environmental conservation, with a particular focus on protecting the seas and oceans.
