SCIENCE BY THE OCEAN IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

In 2019, we officially opened our first on-land coral reef laboratory in our Bavaro Complex in the Dominican Republic. Located directly on the beach at Coral Level at Iberostar Selection Bavaro, guests can visit our lab and learn more about the science we are performing to improve the health of our oceans.

    All of our hotels around the world are free of single-use plastics. We are also working to become waste free by 2025 and carbon neutral by 2030.

  • Mangrove restoration

    We have established a mangrove restoration program at our Bávaro complex in the Dominican Republic. We have planted close to 5,000 mangroves donated by the Ministry of the Environment.

  • Helping coral reefs withstand climate change

    At the Coral Lab, we study how we can help protect coral reefs in the face of climate change and carry out research with our science team. All guests staying at the Bávaro resort can visit the Lab to see live corals, learn more about corals and learn about our work to care for them.

  • Composting plant

    As part of our work to send no waste to landfill by 2025, we have our own composting plant. Here we transform organic waste from the complex, such as fruit and vegetable scraps, into compost that we can use for our gardens.

  • The kitchens at Iberostar Selection Bavaro are equipped with the AI-powered Winnow system, which measures the amount of food waste we produce and helps us reduce it as part of our goal to send no waste to landfill by 2025.

  • Certified restaurants offering sustainable seafood

    The Bavaro complex has four restaurants with MSC/ASC chain-of-custody certification.
